Armenian President: Iran's Role in Regional Stability Significant

TEHRAN The Armenian President Robert Kocharyan attached great importance to the role Iran plays in restoration of regional peace and stability and instilling healthy economic growth to the region. Kocharyan made the remark in a meeting with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Euro-American Affairs Morteza Sarmadi in Yerevan Wednesday. Thanking his Iranian counterpart President Hojjatoleslam Mohammad Khatami who had congratulated him for having been elected as the new Armenian president, Kocharyan emphasized on continuation of the bilateral relations and further promotion of the region Dwelling on the existing political and economic relations between Tehran and Yerevan, the Armenian president stated that his government desired to see further expansion and deepening of the neighborly relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Sarmadi on his part briefed Kocharyan on the priorities of the Iranian foreign policy, saying that Tehran gave special priority to its relations with the neighboring nations particularly the Caucasian region.

Exchanging his views with the Armenian president on the regional crises particularly the Karabakh crisis, the visiting deputy Iranian foreign minister indicated that building trust between the nations in the Caucasian region was the major precondition fo Sarmadi also met with the Armenian Prime Minister Armen Darbinyan on Wednesday. The Armenian officials expressed his government's desire to expand and strengthen ties with Iran. At the meeting which was also attended by some senior Armenian ministers and the head of the Irano-Armenian Joint Commission, the two sides discussed the need to set up the new Tehran-Yerevan joint meeting and the two countries' promotion of joint cooper They agreed to further activate the subcommittees of the two nations' joint commission particularly in the areas of energy, mines industries, transportation, telecommunication and agriculture.

Meanwhile, in another meeting with the chairman of the Armenian Supreme Council, the Iranian deputy foreign minister discussed expansion of Tehran-Yerevan cooperation at the bilateral and regional levels. During their meeting the two sides also called for promotion of cooperation between parliaments of the two countries, exchange of delegations and the use of experience in the legislative affairs. Bilateral and multilateral economic cooperation, Armenian domestic developments and other important issues such as the Karabakh crisis were reviewed at the meeting.
